V58.0991.001 - taught in EnglishSeminar: Introduction to Gaelic Civilization and Literature

This 14 week course (delivered through the medium of English) aims to provide an overview of the Gaelic tradition in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.

The beginning of the course will deal with Irish in its Gaelic, Celtic and Indo-European backdrop. It will then examine what type of literature was produced in the Old Irish period (6th century AD onwards) and will explore how the Gaelic language, society, civilization, literary and folk traditions developed in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man through to the present day.  The sociolinguistic position of the Gaelic languages will also be considered in an historical and contemporary context.
