The Quest for Annie Moore with Megan Smolenyak
Thursday, March 14, 2013, 7:00 p.m.
at Glucksman Ireland House NYU
Annie Moore tripped down a gangplank and into the pages of history in 1892 when she became the first immigrant to arrive at Ellis Island. But less than a century later, an Illinois-born Annie Moore had somehow taken her place and was celebrated in song, statue and literature. That all ended when some stubborn genealogists decided to use their sleuthing skills to seek out the right Annie.
Megan Smolenyak is a genealogist, author, and speaker. Formerly Chief Family Historian for Ancestry.com, she is best known for tracing the roots of Michelle and Barack Obama; uncovering the story of Annie Moore, and championing the use of DNA testing to learn about one's roots. She holds a BSFS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, an MBA in International Business from George Washington University and an MAS in Information Technology from John Hopkins University.
