Screening of Knocknagow, Ireland's first major film

knocknagow_still_2.jpgScreening of Knocknagow (1918)

Friday April 7th, 4:00 pm

Please join us for a screening of Ireland's first major film, Knocknagow, a silent film that was released in 1918.  With an informal discussion by film historians Maryanne Felter and Daniel Schultz and live accompaniment by NYU's Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra, this should be a rare and memorable event.  This event will take place at Glucksman Ireland House.

Knocknagow was directed by Fred O'Donovan, an actor at the Abbey Theater, and was based on a nationalist novel by Charles Kickham.  Knocknagow was one of the first major films to be produced in Ireland, and is the earliest surviving film made in Ireland - all previous films were burned in the 1916 Rising.

Dr. Stephen Donovan, a visiting scholar at NYU in the English department, is a descendant of a member of the cast of Knocknagow, and because of this, is in possession of one of the only copies of the film in existence.  We believe this to be the first screening of this film in America in many decades.

Please RSVP to ireland.house@nyu.edu or (212) 998-3950

Glucksman Ireland House is located at One Washington Mews
